Quantum Optics Intern

Back

SpeQtral is looking for a motivated Quantum Optics Intern to join our team of quantum pioneers in Singapore. We are commercialising quantum communications to prepare the world for the quantum future, including free-space quantum optics, entanglement distribution and highly secure communications. The intern will gain hands-on exposure to the development, testing and deployment of quantum optics and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technologies for space and ground applications.

At SpeQtral, you will work closely with scientists and engineers on real-world quantum communication challenges while developing practical laboratory, engineering and technical documentation skills.

Qualification:

  • Graduating BSc, currently pursuing Master’s or PhD in physics, applied physics, photonics, optical engineering, electrical or electronic engineering, or a related discipline
  • Strong interest in quantum optics, quantum communications, optoelectronics and hands-on experimental work
  • Careful, organised and safety-conscious approach to laboratory work, with a willingness to learn and follow established engineering processes
  • Ability to communicate clearly, document work accurately and collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Availability to participate in laboratory and field activities

Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Senior Quantum Optics Engineer and work with the Quantum Optics Team Lead and Engineering team to realise SpeQtral’s core quantum optics technologies
  • Support proof-of-concept experiments focused on world-class free-space quantum optics systems for space and ground applications
  • Assist with prototype building
  • Support the design, assembly and testing of electronic circuits and subsystems for QKD systems, including PCB assembly, wiring, equipment setup and validation testing
  • Assist engineers with laboratory testing, troubleshooting and characterisation of optical, electronic and optoelectronic hardware
  • Contribute to theoretical analysis of devices under test, experimental test procedures, support equipment and post-test evaluation
  • Participate in laboratory, field and test campaigns, including setup, coordination, data collection and validation
  • Document test procedures, results and observations, and assist in preparing high-quality technical documentation, user guides and presentation materials
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned

Optoelectronics background – preferred:

  • Currently pursuing studies in optoelectronics, photonics, optical engineering, electrical or electronic engineering, applied physics, or a related discipline
  • Understanding of optoelectronic devices and systems, such as lasers, LEDs, photodiodes, optical detectors, modulators, sensors and associated drive or readout electronics
  • Exposure to optical alignment, fibre optics, free-space optics, optical power measurement or the characterisation of optical and optoelectronic components
  • Basic understanding of analogue and digital electronics, including amplifiers, sensors, signal-conditioning circuits, microcontrollers and communication interfaces
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment such as optical power meters, oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies and signal generators
  • Ability to conduct experiments carefully, analyse data, maintain accurate records and follow established laboratory and engineering processes

Additional optoelectronics experience – advantageous:

  • Hands-on experience assembling, aligning or testing optical, photonic or optoelectronic prototypes
  • Exposure to laser drivers, detector readout circuits, transimpedance amplifiers, data acquisition systems or embedded control electronics
  • Experience with optical design or modelling software such as Zemax, Code V or similar tools
  • Exposure to PCB design tools such as Altium, KiCad or similar software, and basic PCB assembly or soldering
  • Basic programming or experimental data analysis using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW or similar tools
  • Interest in applying optoelectronics expertise to quantum communications, QKD systems and space-to-ground optical links

What the internship offers:

  • Hands-on experience with quantum optics, QKD and space-to-ground communication technologies.
  • Mentorship from experienced scientists and engineers in a multidisciplinary deep-tech environment
  • Exposure to laboratory development, field deployment and environmental test campaigns
  • Opportunities to strengthen practical engineering, data analysis, documentation and presentation skills
  • Experience contributing to real-world quantum communication projects and product development
